Why do I Babywear?

ryan babywearing The true answer why I stared babywearing is that my baby was really really heavy, at two months he was 13 pounds! My two arms just couldn't carry all his weight. So I looked for stuff around the house I could use to carry him. I tried the backpack carriers I received as baptismal gifts. Disaster! I managed to squeeze in my baby up to his tummy, half of his body was sticking out. I showed it to my husband and he ended up on the floor laughing.

After a search I ended up with an old blanket which I tied around my shoulders. It worked great, except that I had to untie it when I took him off or wanted to change positions. So I searched the net for something more manageable, because the Lord knows all the answers we need are on the net:-) and I found some information about ringslings. I decided to make one myself and from then on there was no turning back. My friends saw it and said I should be selling it to other moms because it was such a great idea and so R' Jellybean Slings was born. The picture you see here is a pouch (non-adjustable sling) and my then 40 pound baby. I can say that from using slings I learned about attachment parenting, and from attachment parenting I went to elimination communication which made me the mother I am now:-) So if ever a mom asks me what she needs to make life easier, I would say breastfeeding (of course) and then babywearing.:-) UPDATE: R' Jellybean Slings are now in SM:-)

I just had found out about babywearing and loved it so much and with friends and classmates from lamaze class urging me to sell slings I decided that’s what I would do. With a capital of five thousand pesos I’ve grown my business in a year to a point

Oh visited your website and your products are nice esp the stylish maternity dresses. :-) Do you import them? Equally interesting are the cloth diapers, will check those out later.

YEs I know I can still baby-wear her but am pregnant now and I'm scared the weight will tire me easily.

RE:BF group, how can I find them? Can you private email me their address and contact nos? My email is entrepinay.net@gmail.com

Thanks Jen.

Hi Sheryl!

The BF support group meets every 2nd Saturday of the month. You might want to check them out.

Ella and I make and sell slings too (www.next9.org) and we've just made our very first delivery to SM! If you need help just let me know, perhaps I can help you wear your baby.

You can still wear your eldest, you said he was born in Nov of last year?

Anonymous's picture

Hi ladies, I stumbled upon your site while surfing scrappinmoms.net. I'm a working mom with a 16-month old daughter and another daughter on the way (in June 2007!). ;-)

I got interested in this topic because right after my eldest was born (nov 2006) I bought a MAYA wrap but never got around to using it. I watched the VCD instructional many times but when I tried it on my baby, I couldn't seem to make her (and myself) comfortable. I read somewhere there's a support group somewhere in Greenhills for Maya wrap wearing but I lost their numbers. I plan to fully utilize the maya wrap when the second baby arrives :-)

If anybody knows of this group, please let me know. Interesting topics here by the way, especially Ella's Valentine "Feeding of the Beast". ;-)

Kudos to all!

Thanks Ella! My mom was making noises about the sling making her apo bow-legged kasi e. :)

Jennifer: No it doesn't.

Anonymous's picture

Jennifer: No it doesn't. And it is a fact that it can be commonly seen in infants, because of their position in the womb prior to birth. The good news is it corrects itself as the child grows.

Beyond the age of two, medicine states that bowleggedness is caused by Rickets which iscaused by lack of vitamin D or calcium in the diet. Blount disease, a condition that affects the tibia bone in the lower leg.

Being in a sling doesn't cause this, in fact putting a child in a sling puts the child in a natural position unlike the usual carriers (backpack) where the child hangs by his/her crotch. Diba our hips look like they were naturally made to carry children parang swak ang legs nila around our hips, nature made it that way:-)

Eto na lang sa Africa they commonly use the sling type carrier but they churn out olympic sprinters and long distance runners.

My baby has been in a sling since four months and he's not bowlegged, and I'm sure Jen can also vouch for that:-)

Hope that answers your question.

I bought an rjellybean sling but really didn't get the hang of it. Now my baby's walking na and prefers to walk so di na kailangan. Try ko siguro ulit sa next baby ko (kelan kaya?). Papaturo nalang ako kung sakali :D

Rinna: You know I have a solarveil sling so I have no problems with babywearing being too hot, even with RJS since the cotton is not thick it doesn't get hot din. Now with a mei tai I find that it can even be cooler since there are air vents on the side, what about making a solarveil mei tai:-)

hi girls, not only that...if the babies are in the stroller, they only see knees!! as opposed to a baby high up in a sling, he/she can see what you can see too. it's really a better choice. (NAKS!)

Anonymous's picture

that's so funny - walang pambili! hahaha! just goes to show how some people are still not that educated with regards to caring for your baby! :) i always told my dad (he would say kawawa, too, especially when i swaddled my baby), that they love it because it reminds them of the womb. they will always feel secure and protected :). that comment was really hilarious! :D i hate the stroller, too, it's so bulky and such a hassle in crowded places.

i wondered about that. how hot does it get when wearing your babies?
i wear Robert in a mei tai now because it's easiest for me to put on but we're going home next year and i'm thinking baka it's too hot for him to be in a mei tai.
any thoughts, ella?

laida: natawa ako dun sa sinabi ng bystander ha. pero nakaka-init ng ulo din. i would've told him off too. :P

Laida: sige, dapat next time

Anonymous's picture

Laida: sige, dapat next time pag labas mo suot mo lahat ng alahas mo para nobody thinks you didn't have money to buy a stroller hahahaha

but seriously it doesn't really matter what other people tell you because you're providing the best care for your baby by babywearing:-)

ps. i would have told him off!

hi ella and jen... thanks

Anonymous's picture

hi ella and jen...

thanks for the advice :) will try that. one thing siguro that makes him think that it's not ok is that when i'm wearing either the sling or the pouch it gets really hot (and i'm pawisin)... but then it really beats the heck out of pushing the stroller (saw people doing that while shopping in greenhills tiangge and vowed i'll never do that he he he).

i agree that babywearing is not mainstream... once while i had nathan in a sling i overheard someone said "ay kawawa naman ito siguro walang pambili ng stroller" X( (i had to use all my self-control to avoid telling off that jerk. that's probably one of the reasons why my hubby hates it when i use the sling - baka ma judge siya as a non-provider)

hi laida! nice to see you

Anonymous's picture

hi laida! nice to see you here! i've never thought about how to get my husband get used to the idea of babywearing...i mean, i just did it, and he probably said, "is kevin comfy?" and i just said "yes" (heck, he wasn't crying anyway) and never asked again. i am of no help to you. hahahaha! sorry! but i agree with ella...if nathan were uncomfy, he'd surely make "i don't agree with this" noises. good luck! :)

Hi laida, Hmmm....that's a

Anonymous's picture

Hi laida, Hmmm....that's a tough one. Well you could first show him the video so that he could see other happy babies in slings. You could also print out information from the cd or from the net that says why slings are better and healthier for your baby's spine. But best of all explain that if Nathan was uncomfortable he would tell you by crying or fussing but since he isn't and is even smiling then he must be happy in the sling, and that you should know because you're the mom, you know when you're baby is unhappy.

I guess you just have to use the sling often to have your husband get used to the idea. Sling wearing kasi is not mainstream so some people really think that babies are uncomfortable in it.

Goodluck, if all else fails, you want me to give him a call:-) he he he

Hello! How did you convince

Anonymous's picture

Hello! How did you convince your better-half that it's ok to put the baby in a sling or pouch? I have a babyland sling (I thought this was the one Ella advertised in the baby magazine) and a rjellybean pouch, and my hubby doesn't like to see my boy in either one because he feels like the baby is not comfortable (even if Nathan is smiling all the time while inside the sling/pouch)? thanks in advance for the advice. :)

[...] But being the restless person that I am, and being ashamed of asking my husband for money all the time I decided that that I had to find a way to make my own money. I just had found out about babywearing and loved it so much and with friends and classmates from lamaze class urging me to sell slings I decided that’s what I would do. With a capital of five thousand pesos I’ve grown my business in a year to a point where I am making fifteen thousand pesos a month minimum. It’s not a lot but it’s enough for me to stay at home and help my husband take care of our family. [...]

I was bent on babywearing

Anonymous's picture

I was bent on babywearing when I was pregnant with my second child. I knew that with a toddler around I needed something to carry the baby with and still leave me hands free. I bought a Baby Bjorn but a friend of mine lent me her Kindersling. My baby loved the sling more (and so did I!) I shopped and traveled and took care of my toddler with ease because of the sling. :D

babywearing is such a winner. with a not-so-toddler in tow then (major laki naman si paul diba?), i had a chance to bond with both kids at the same time! and it made breastfeeding a cinch outside! i miss it now since kev prefers to walk most of the time---but not when sleepy, so that's when i take my chance. =)
