Mosquito Repellant

One of the parent egroups I'm on had a discussion of mosquito repellants. In this dengue-plagued time, who won't be afraid?

I never liked using Off! because of the DEET content, however "safe to consumers" they say it is. So what are my options?

Citronella-based products!

Oil of Citronella has been used for over 50 years as an insect repellent and as an animal repellent. It is found in many familiar insect repellent products: candles, lotions, gels, sprays and towelette wipes for use on clothing and people. These products repel various insects, some of which are public health pests, such as mosquitoes, biting flies and fleas. When used according to the label, citronella products are not expected to cause harm to humans, pets or the environment. (got this here)

My sister was able to get me some citronella patches from The PhP88 Store in Alabang Town Center. Imagine a damp (because of the citronella) round blue band aid that you stick on clothes instead of the body.

Another alternative is Ilog Maria's Sting-less Mosquito Repellant. It has bee propolis which is "a natural preservative and has a strong disinfecting property. It inhibits the growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi. It also strengthens your immune system. " (got that from the site)

The last alternative I have is something that's homemade. You should have citronella essential oil--and it has to be PURE. How can you tell? It comes in *tiny* bottles and costs *a lot*. Hahahahaha! Then, get a bottle of olive oil (yes, the one you use for salad...no need for extra virgin because that smells a bit funny) and drop the citronella essence until the fragrance is strong enough. Remember, the insects are repelled by the scent.

This is what I use when I take the kids out. It's great because the skin absorbs the olive oil really quickly and doesn't leave a sticky, oily feel.

What do you guys use?

Re: Mosquito Repellant

Bioneem insect 3-in-1 repellent is effective for us. We have been using it for months and it replaces 3 other products in the market. Interested about Bioneem products?

Re: Mosquito Repellant

I used the anti-mosquito patches shown in the pic for my nephew and for my husband who loves the outdoors. I think it's effective because my nephew didn't complain on insect bites even if we're out the house the whole day.

Re: Mosquito Repellant

i took the kids to the beach in bataan a few weekends ago and i used the antimosquito patches (i'm selling them kasi and wanted to see how effective they were) that you have a picture of here. it worked remarkably well! i would put a patch at hip-level on my pants and it would protect me and my 3 month old (who i'd be carrying). i put one on the inside leg of the shorts that my older boys would wear and they didn't get bitten! i'm so surprised and pleased that it works! usually the boys are bitten a minimum of 5 times in a day... but this time, zero! galeng talaga! the scent of Citronella is a bit strong, but since that's what keeps the mosquitoes away, i just kept it away from mine and my kids' noses. =)

@nicquee - I get Bioneem

@nicquee -

I get Bioneem from our pedia's secretary for P350 (110 ml tube). It's a little bit expensive but I usually buy 4-5 tubes each time kasi nga they're not available elsewhere.

I recently had an offer to be a reseller of Bioneem but you'll have to purchase a kit for 3K (with Bioneem Lotion, ointments, soap etc). Since I use it a lot naman, I'm seriously thinking about taking the offer. Share na lang kami ng SIL ko sa initial cost since she uses the product too. After that, you can buy the items at a discounted price.

As for effectivity, I still think that Off works better, but the DEET thing scares me a little. So, this is the best alternative for me plus I love its moisturizing effect. I still keep a bottle of Off Overtime just in case. Hehe!

I've also tried Shoo Fly from Indigo Baby. Smells a little like Bioneem (probably the citronella). You just need to re-apply every so often.

I've been seeing BIONEEM in

I've been seeing BIONEEM in my pedia's clinic but I haven't bought one. Is it really effective? It's price is 325 i think for a 100ml tube. Is that reasonable?

Hello, you might want to try

Hello, you might want to try our Bioneem insect repellent lotion. Have been using it for my boys since November and I'm quite happy with it. It's a natural and organic repellent which has neem and other philippine herbs like citronella, lemongrass, atis extract, etc. Aside from the repellent properties of neem, atis extracts have been found to be effective in repelling Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in local studies. That's why the protection can last up to 9 hours according to some who have used it. And it's less worrisome to reapply(in these dengue plagued times) compared to the deet containing repellents, of which the AAP is recommending to use only products with 10% or less deet in children.

I also use chicco insect

I also use chicco insect repellant bec it says it is safe for babies 0 months.

There's also this insect repellant bracelet called Bugslock. Citronella based and DEET free. Available online at http://proudmamastore.multiply.com. Sells for P200 each and comes in blue, pink and orange. great for moms who prefer not applying the repellant directly on the skin. Made in Korea.

Hi, I used Chicco mosquito

Hi, I used Chicco mosquito repellants but they didn't seem to work. I tried the roll-on, the spray, even the plug-in. :-( I'm now using the badger. I don't like how it smells but I hope it works. :-)

I react to the smell of pure

I react to the smell of pure citronella oil so I can't use it on my daughter. What I did was I used citromint oil in the oil burner. The oil (and the burner) can be found at a stall in Crossings (Shangri-la) at EDSA-Shaw. Of course, you also need to be careful with stagnant water. Always empty your pails and dippers so that there will be no breeding place for the mosquitoes.

hi moms!

My son has been using OFF Kids eversince he had Dengue :( That time he was 1.6 years old and it was a grueling 1 week. That was a year ago and he's doing well. I've not noticed any bad change in him, only good. He is advanced intellectually, so I guess it's okay.

I've had my reservations about using OFF but since the dengue thing, ay! no more taking chances.

He's doing fine naman, so I guess it's okay.

Hi Giselle! California

Hi Giselle!
California Babies is also citronella-based, with lemongrass and eucalyptus. Chicco is neem-oil based (though they call it Indian lilac). I also researched on neem and unfortunately, its tests on effectiveness are also inconclusive.

I used citronella and eucalyptus spray on my son every morning before going to school. It's funny because one day he told me "Mommy, can you use the other one na lang (he meant Off), because the mosquitoes still bite me!" I reluctantly switched back to DEET-based Off. :-(

Anonymous's picture

Hello! I've found this

Hello! I've found this citronella lotion which comes in a convenient pump bottle from dermadoctor.com. It's called California Babies and it helps keep the mosquitoes away. A little pricey with 10$ a bottle but I have been using it for a year already. Although I would still suggest wearing cotton pajamas during the daytime as further deterrent. I've seen Chicco anti-mosquito products on the baby shelves (sprays, ointments, electrical repellants) recently and I wonder if they work...

Anonymous's picture

Hi Rinna, Badger & Burts

Hi Rinna,
Badger & Burts Bees are also citronella-based, with a few added ingredients like lemongrass and geranium. Siguro ganoon na nga lang, apply the product every 15-30 minutes, or fully-clothe the baby or don't expose him outside na lang. US NIH doesn't recommend putting mosquito repellent till 2 years old. :-(

Anonymous's picture

Hi Snoopymom, I use Badger

Hi Snoopymom,
I use Badger Bug Balm or Burts Bees Insect repellant on my son who is 16mos old. So far, it seems to work on him. I do have to apply it constantly though in order for it to be effective. My son is at the age where he still puts things in his mouth (including his own body parts) so I'm leery about using DEET. I'll probably use DEET as needed (like if there's a risk of dengue, lyme disease, etc) when he's a little bit older.

Anonymous's picture

Hi moms! Sorry to burst some

Hi moms!
Sorry to burst some bubbles here... I came across some clinical trials by reputable scientific research centers abroad, comparing the effectivity of various repellents, including DEET, citronella, eucalyptus, soybean oil, etc. The most consistent results still show DEET-based products as most effective (3-6 hrs protection for 23.8% DEET), followed by soybean oil (16 mins to 3 hrs protection). The best results shown by citronella was 1 hr (Natrapel). All other citronella-based products showed inconsistent results, from 5-30 mins (Buzz Away) to as low as 1-15 mins (Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard). Off Skintastic for Kids, which is 4.5% DEET, showed 45 mins to 2 hrs effectivity.

I personally don't like using DEET on my kids too, since there are documented cases (though rare) of neurological effects, especially on kids. I'm therefore confused if I should continue using DEET (just have to be careful how to apply it), or use citronella though I know it is not as effective. I don't want to take a chance with dengue...
