Blackstrap Molasses-Wonder Food
here and here if you want to know why) I really was happy to find out about blackstrap molasses. Even pregnant moms will find this a lifesaver because it can give them the iron they need without the constipation that comes from taking iron supplements. I put it in our oatmeal in the morning or to sweeten our juices. And if you're wondering where you can get your hands on a bottle, I get mine from healthy options (organic) but I saw a bottle once in Rustan's supermarket. The table below gives you a breakdown of the nutritional content of two teaspoons(!) of blackstrap molasses.
The chart above and text below from this link.
Health Benefits
Blackstrap molasses is a sweetener that is actually good for you. Unlike refined white sugar and corn syrup, which are stripped of virtually all nutrients except simple carbohydrates, or artificial sweeteners like saccharine or aspartame, which not only provide no useful nutrients but have been shown to cause health problems in sensitive individuals, blackstrap molasses is a healthful sweetener that contains significant amounts of a variety of minerals that promote your health.
Iron for Energy
In addition to providing quickly assimilated carbohydrates, blackstrap molasses can increase your energy by helping to replenish your iron stores. Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of iron. Particularly for menstruating women, who are more at risk for iron deficiency, boosting iron stores with blackstrap molasses is a good idea--especially because, in comparison to red meat, a well known source of iron, blackstrap molasses provides more iron for less calories and is totally fat-free. Iron is an integral component of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen from the lungs to all body cells, and is also part of key enzyme systems for energy production and metabolism. And, if you're pregnant or lactating, your needs for iron increase. Growing children and adolescents also have increased needs for iron. Just 2 teaspoons of blackstrap molasses will sweetly provide you with 13.3% of the daily recommended value for iron.
A Spoonful of Molasses Helps Your Calcium Needs Go Down
Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of calcium. Calcium, one of the most important minerals in the body, is involved in a variety of physiological activities essential to life, including the ability of the heart and other muscles to contract, blood clotting, the conduction of nerve impulses to and from the brain, regulation of enzyme activity, and cell membrane function. Calcium is needed to form and maintain strong bones and teeth during youth and adolescence, and to help prevent the loss of bone that can occur during menopause and as a result of rheumatoid arthritis. Calcium binds to and removes toxins from the colon, thus reducing the risk of colon cancer, and because it is involved in nerve conduction, may help prevent migraine attacks. Two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses will meet 11.8% of your daily needs for calcium.
An Energizing Mineral-Dense Sweetener
Molasses is also an excellent source of copper and manganese and a very good source of potassium, and magnesium. Copper, an essential component of many enzymes, plays a role in a wide range of physiological processes including iron utilization, elimination of free radicals, development of bone and connective tissue, and the production of the skin and hair pigment called melanin. Numerous health problems can develop when copper intake is inadequate, including iron deficiency anemia, ruptured blood vessels, osteoporosis, joint problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, brain disturbances, elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol and reduced HDL (good) cholesterol levels, irregular heartbeat, and increased susceptibility to infections. Using two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses to sweeten your morning cereal and the coffee or tea you drink during the day will supply you with 14.0% of the daily recommended value for copper. That same amount of blackstrap molasses will also provide you with 18.0% of the day's needs for manganese. This trace mineral helps produce energy from protein and carbohydrates, and is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids that are important for a healthy nervous system and in the production of cholesterol that is used by the body to produce sex hormones. Manganese is also a critical component of an important antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is found exclusively inside the body's mitochondria (the oxygen-based energy factories inside most of our cells) where it provides protection against damage from the free radicals produced during energy production. Like calcium, potassium plays an important role in muscle contraction and nerve transmission. When potassium is deficient in the diet, activity of both muscles and nerves can become compromised. Potassium is an especially important mineral for atheletes since it is involved in carbohydrate storage for use by muscles as fuel and is also important in maintaining the body's proper electrolyte and acid-base (pH) balance. When potassium levels drop too low, muscles get weak, and athletes tire more easily during exercise, as potassium deficiency causes a decrease in glycogen (the fuel used by exercising muscles) storage. Simply by adding two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses to your morning smoothie, you can supply 9.7% of your potassium needs for the day along with a healthy dose of carbohydrates to burn. Calcium's balancing major mineral, magnesium is also necessary for healthy bones and energy production. About two-thirds of the magnesium in the human body is found in our bones. Some helps give bones their physical structure, while the rest is found on the surface of the bone where it is stored for the body to draw upon as needed. Magnesium, by balancing calcium, helps regulate nerve and muscle tone. In many nerve cells, magnesium serves as Nature's own calcium channel blocker, preventing calcium from rushing into the nerve cell and activating the nerve. By blocking calcium's entry, magnesium keeps our nerves (and the blood vessels and muscles they ennervate) relaxed. If our diet provides us with too little magnesium, however, calcium can gain free entry, and the nerve cell can become overactivated, sending too many messages and causing excessive contraction. Insufficient magnesium can thus contribute to high blood pressure, muscle spasms (including spasms of the heart muscle or the spasms of the airways symptomatic of asthma), and migraine headaches, as well as muscle cramps, tension, soreness and fatigue. In two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses, you will receive 7.3% of the daily value for magnesium. Switching from nutrient-poor sweeteners like white sugar or corn syrup, or from potentially harmful fake sweeteners like aspartame or saccharin to nutrient-dense blackstrap molasses is one simple way that eating healthy can sweeten your life.

Re: Blackstrap Molasses-Wonder Food
That's a great recommendation, thanks for keep us informed. I know we need to pay attention to the sweeteners we use, a lot of products in this category are not exactly healthy products. I use bee pollen complex not just as a sweetener but also as a nutritional supplement. Are there any other health alternatives on this category?
I love Molasses (cookies)
Nice article and I really enjoyed looking at the graph about all the different ingredients found in molasses.
-Jack
are there any reasons why
are there any reasons why blackstrap molasses shouldn't be given to a 6mo old as an alternative to other iron supplements.
thanks for your molasses
thanks for your molasses article ella! i stumbled upon it while looking it up online. i too have become recently fascinated by BSM. i have one question though... if the phils is supposedly one of the biggest producers of molasses (you would think!) according to http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=118 how come it's so darn hard to find here?? the one i got from healthy options is ofcourse imported. go figure.

thanks, rinna! i'll try that as well :)
ByNature, I just recently
ByNature,
I just recently heard of the phrase "it takes 10 tries to develop a taste". This was in response to me sharing to our LLL group how my son is a picky eater. And I realize that if I introduce a new food to my son, it really does take a few tries before he'll take to it.
really? okay, i'll try it
really? okay, i'll try it then. 'coz i let my son taste the actual thing and he didn't like it at all. whenever he'd see me holding a spoon with "brown stuff", he'll run away or cover his mouth. now i can try "hiding" the molasses in some of his darker drinks. thanks! :)
Hi Bynature, it does plain
Hi Bynature, it does plain but when you mix it with food it kind of has a reaction and doesn't taste the same, my son loves it and can eat a bowl of oatmeal:-)
hi, beth! sorry to hear
hi, beth!
sorry to hear about your myoma. i sure hope you get cured by taking blackstrap molasses.
you can buy the real organic one from healthy options. my friend who works there said they only have 1 branch in mindanao and it's in SM davao. maybe you know someone there who can buy it for you.
good luck!
btw, it kinda tastes funny for a sweetener. to me, it tastes kind of bitter with a wine-like/alcohol aftertaste. i can't imagine it with my pancakes, oatmeal, or juices :).
hi, i was diagnosed of
hi,
i was diagnosed of myoma uteri(5.3cm) and the doctor suggested that i have to double time to get pregnant before the operation of my fibroids and possible removal of the uterus.i was so down because i am just engaged and my fiance is overseas and i have this desire to get pregnant.so,i did my research in the net for an alternative medicine for myoma and found blackstrap molasses to be one of the great cure, hopefully, with God's grace and mercy.I scouted for molasses in our area here in northern mindanao and found only one grocery store which sell molasses repack in a plastic jar.but,im not sure whether its sulfured, unsulfured or blackstrap.its name is WILPACK megasale in valenzuela, pasay.can you recommend a store in cagayan de oro which sell a true blackstrap molasses.thank you very much and God bless you
thank you for your reply,
thank you for your reply, ella! much appreciated :)

ByNature: Hi got your message at my site, sorry for the late reply,i remembered replying to your questions, maybe it wasn't posted
1. yes powdered milk is even worse because it's processed food, if you still want to drink milk then i just suggest using the organic kind, i posted the contact number at the other blog post on organic products but just in case, you can callo rizal dairy farms at 6602197/6698177 for organic milk, eggs, meat etc.
2. your son just needs a tablespoon or two of blackstrap molasses, you can still give your son multi-vitamins but as much as possible just give him a well balanced meal (not always possible, my son now is such a picky eater!)
3. i've heard arguments against soya milk but if you give it in moderation or once in while then why not.
Rinna, Hahahahahahha,
Rinna,
Hahahahahahha, wonderful!
Ella, I just gave Robert his
Ella,
I just gave Robert his first taste of blackstrap molasses and he loved it!
I mixed it with his oatmeal and applesauce. Naubos nya close to two bowls! And if you know my son, he's sobrang hirap pakainin.
I <3 BM...
ok... that did not sound right...
I <3 blackstrap molasses!!! :)
i forgot to ask about soya
i forgot to ask about soya milk. are they safer and a good alternative for fresh cow's milk?
oh my, my, my...after
oh my, my, my...after reading this, i'm feeling both happy and sad. happy that i learned about blackstrap molasses, and sad because i love milk but they're more on the "unhealthy side" nowadays. my son loves milk as well, as in REALLY LOVES MILK. so i don't know how i'll wean him from it. does the same threat go for powdered milk?
ella, is it okay to e-mail me your source for organic milk? :) what about carabao's milk? are they safe for daily consumption?
also, how much blackstrap molasses is enough for my 3-year-old son to take daily? he can still continue his daily vitamins, right, without getting an overdose of the nutrients?
thanks in advance! this is really interesting...
Buy the non-sulfured kind.
Buy the non-sulfured kind.
Thanks again Ella for this
Thanks again Ella for this info! I am so clueless! All this time I had it sit on the cupboard. Dali dali kong nilagay sa ref. Hehe =) It tastes the same pa naman, no trace of it being spoiled.
Btw, there are several variants kasi, like full flavor, et.al. Are they all the same, I mean per nutrition value?
Hi maybs, I was just at the
Hi maybs,
I was just at the store yesterday and it looks like they are different. The nutritional content is different like blackstrap molasses have waaayyyy more iron in them, so I guess iba nga sila.
Is blackstrap molasses
Is blackstrap molasses different pa from those labeled simply as "molasses"? I always wondered about that. I admit, I have yet to get used to the taste of molasses!

By the way Jennie you have
By the way Jennie you have to refrigerate your molasses.
Hi Rinna, Dr. Chen is great!
Hi Rinna, Dr. Chen is great! Glad Robert didn't get confined, that would be have been awful.
Jennie, yes it does have a bit of a strong flavor that's why I think God made it so nutrient packed, He just wants you to use a little at time since we only need one to two tablespoons a day:-)
Wow! I wouldn't have known
Wow! I wouldn't have known blackstrap molasses could be so good. Thanks Ella for the info =) I just have it sit around the cupboard when I don't use it for baking banana cake and cookies. I actually tasted it after reading this entry. It didn't appeal to me then because of its rather strong flavor. It tastes a lot like muscovado sugar that we use, which is not bad. :-)
Ella, Now why didn't I think
Ella,
Now why didn't I think of that? But, we were also pretty frantic at that time. Next year perhaps??? :)
Yeah, the amoebiasis was scary. We actually saw Dr. Chen more often than any of my friends or relatives! Haha! But we're so glad we went with her. Robert had diarrhea for 4 weeks but he never got dehydrated or confined sa hospital. Ayan, off-topic na.
But, I'm going to get blackstrap molasses today. I've been meaning to for the longest time and your post just convinced me that I should be getting it na talaga. :D
Hi Rinna, you should have
Hi Rinna, you should have emailed me when you were here, I have a source for organic milk:-) sorry your son got amoebiasis, how horrible and scary.
Jac, I really advise you
Jac, I really advise you not to put any sweeteners in your baby's water. There are so many problems with juvenile obesity nowadays and it's really not advisable to start a sweet tooth early on - tooth decay is another issue. Babies will drink if they're thirsty and they already get their water from their milk.
Hi Aiza, Here in the US,
Hi Aiza,
Here in the US, they're moving towards hormone-free milk na. But then again, even if it's hormone-free, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's from antibiotic-free cows. Also, the food that the cows eat won't necessarily mean it's pesticide-free. Kaya I buy organic milk/dairy products. It was really hard when we were in Manila because I couldn't find any organic milk/dairy products. But then again, my son contracted amoebiasis so it was kinda moot.
Hi Aiza, scary right, you
Hi Aiza, scary right, you can buy organic milk if you still are interested in drinking milk or quit milk altogether . Kaya as much as possible I avoid non-organic produce also, you never know what pesticides lurk in your food.
Jac, why do you sweeten your baby’s water? Just curious. But yes you can use it as an alternative to your other sweeteners, that’s what we do:-)
can i use blackstrap instead
can i use blackstrap instead of karo light syrup? ..as a sweetener for my baby's water?
OMG!! This is info overload
OMG!! This is info overload for me. The milk thing, that is. Those hormones that they feed cows can cause breast and ovarian cancer??!! Ayayay. Scary.
