Messy Bessy

I swear, I have NEVER NEVER been THIS excited about household cleaning products, REALLY!!!

Over the holidays, I've received this wonderful present! They're earth-friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable!

I got one of the specials they had, one with a tabo, disinfectant aroma spray and eucalyptus all purpose scrub.

The reason I found these products so appealing is this--

All products are made with SAFE, NON-TOXIC, ALL NATURAL, BIODEGRADABLE ingredients
that are not only good for your health, but for the planet too! Here are a few examples...

‣ Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) - a food-safe, biodegradable and deodorizing miracle cleaner
‣ Distilled White Vinegar - a disinfecting, deodorizing & anti-fungal natural acid
‣ Essential Oils - not only antiseptic but fragrant too!

All these were made locally, and therefore no excess fuel is used to bring the products to you!

And yes, so many of our household products have scary things inside them. Just the scent of some bathroom cleaners are enough to send you scurrying away. They're olfactory killers!!!

But what's also very interesting is the story behind the products.

I read through their brochure and was very interested about this project so I asked my friend where she got them. Apparently, her cousin and her siblings pioneered this in the Philippines.

So I wrote Krie Reyes-Lopez of Messy Bessy and asked why she came up with these items. I received a wonderful story behind it.

Here is what Krie says---

As for why I came up with the products, it really began with another project we started last year called HOUSE (Helping Ourselves through Sustainable Enterprises). My brother, sister and I worked to conceive the project which is based on the Delancey Street Foundation, a widely successful self-sustaining rehabilitation program in San Francisco (delanceystreetfoundation.org).

Having worked in social development for years already, I was honestly getting tired of projects and programs that were dependent on other people's donations. I began researching on self-sustained programs, or termed recently as "social entrepreneurship", and I particularly liked Delancey -- they took in the bottom 2% of the society -- drug addicts, excons, homeless, etc. -- and they provided them with jobs that educated and empowered them and later on placed them back into mainstream society. The income from the businesses they worked for in turn sustained the whole program. I actually went to visit the foundation 2 years ago, and this prompted me to start something here.

So Messy Bessy came up as one of the 'enterprises' that would employ the disadvantaged young adults we currently work with. I personally felt that there was a need for affordable and local safe cleaners. At the same time, we also always want to make sure that the enterprises we develop have strong social values too -- for example, Messy Bessy is earth friendly and non-toxic. So while we are aiming for Messy Bessy to provide homes with safe and natural cleaners, we are also providing marginalized people experiences in manufacturing, accounting, sales and hopefully a lot more.

And for you guys who are interested in purchasing Messy Bessy products, here is their product list---

YEYEYEY for non-toxic

YEYEYEY for non-toxic cleaners!! i think i saw their products on display at the OPTA (organic coop) store in loyola heights along esteban abada. didn't have much time to browse around though... i banned commercial cleaners and chlorine based products in my house and instead, use a lot of baking soda, salt, and white vinegar, as well as plain Perla bars. they work wonders!
