Traditional vs Progressive Schools

Do you have kids who need to take the exam to big school this year? You guys might want to read this first... I attended a talk by Didi Manahan, a professor at the Ateneo and the directress of Explorations Preschool and Keys Gradeschool about traditional and progressive schools. I think it is important to realize that progressive schools are present nowadays because there is more and more proof that people learn differently. And just because one doesn't go to a traditional school, it doesn't mean that he/she is "intellectually challenged". As a quick overview, these are the basic differences between a traditional and a progressive school.

You might be thinking that, hey, progressive doesn't seem so strange after all. In fact, if you've visited the school that our son went to, and listen to their philosophy, you will definitely think it makes MORE sense to send your child to a progressive school! What with 40 children per class in a traditional school??? How will your kid learn at all?

One thing that really draws me to a progressive curriculum is that the concepts are investigated upon. The kids aren't made to swallow things "just because". I think that that's what is needed now--to teach kids how to be critical thinkers.

However, for those who are not convinced, here is the list of pros for traditional schools.

Something to think about, parents. PS--and if you're wondering about us, well, Paul's going to his dad's school. =p We'll see how he fares. His dad promised me we'd assess and discuss this after Grade 1 or 2. We'll see...abangan ang susunod na kabanata.

progressive traditional Montessori Waldorf

elan2010's picture

Thanks for this very interesting site.
We should really rethink the fundamental principles on which we're educating our children. I had sent my 2 children to four different schools and had always been frustrated at how traditional schools teach different concepts to children. Oftentimes I would improvise materials for my daughter to understand her lessons in school especially in Mathematics. Sometimes I even think of homeschooling her. I wish we live in Metro Manila. It looks like there are more choices out there.
Recently I've been reading books written by Dr. Maria Montessori. She wrote those books almost a century ago but her works can still be applied in the present era. These progressive schools you're talking about are somewhat very similar to her Montessori school. I hope parents get the chance to read about her too. The other important figure in childhood education is Rudolf Steiner(Waldorf School).

By the way, would you categorize Montessori (authentic ones) and Waldorf schools as progressive?

do progressive schools prepare kids for big schools?

bheck's picture

Hi moms!
Please bear with me as I am just a beginner.
I am considering enrolling my son to a learning center (Cradle to Crayons Learning Center). Is this considered a progressive school? Their curriculum is pretty much not the traditional one. I am interested to know if such schools would prepare kids to enroll to big schools like Ateneo. Thanks!

Cradle to Crayons Learning Center

Cradle to Crayons? If this is the one in Marcelo Green...GO FOR IT!!! Ciara is heading over to La Salle Zobel now for Sr. Prep...previously, she was at CTCLC for Jr. Prep. I wish I had found this school earlier. I can't thank them enough for the attention that they gave our daughter. Ciara's skills, cognitive, social, physical, emotional....all grew by leaps and bounds! Big school test? No prob. Teacher Jill worked with us to get her ready. And yes, it is a progressive school...and very individualized. You won't regret enrolling your child there.

Pre Schools in Mandaluyong

Anonymous's picture

Hi! My daughter is turning 3 this May. Appreciate feedback on good schools in Mandaluyong. Thanks!

You might want to try out

alyspice75's picture

You might want to try out Milestone Preschool. It's not in Mandaluyong but it's quite near because it's just in San Juan. My daughter went there last year and she has definitely bloomed into a very sociable and smart child! She used to be afraid of people, always hiding behind us during birthday parties and even gatherings with relatives. But everything changed when she started to go to school! She also surprises us with the things that she knows! The school teaches the children not only academics but instills good values. They even teach environmental awareness to the kids. By the way, they also potty trained my daughter which is a relief for me and my husband!
We really love the school, and we appreciate how kind, loving and nurturing the teachers are.

Explorations Pre-school on Araullo st. is one of the best I have checked out, they have 2 morning sessions and 1 afternoon session. I already reserved a slot for my daughter, also 3 y.o. TLC on Pilar St. is also a very good school, with 2 morning sessions. Yu Ming on Ideal st. is another one with very good reviews as well. Location of these 3 schools are all near (Puregold) Shaw Blvd.
Hope this helps.

List of traditional or progressive schools in QC

Anonymous's picture

My son is 5 years old and has been attending Nursery in a school near our place. He has been diagnosed with delayed speech but has been improving each day. He might have special needs but has been proven to adapt to a regular classroom. My husband and I plan to look for another school this year.

Any suggestions on traditional or progressive schools in QC? Thanks!

List of trad or progressive schools in QC

Mom-Friday's picture

hi, i highly recommend DML Montessori pre-school on 7th st. New Manila. It is a traditional school with Montessori application. My son is diagnosed with mild sensory processing disorder but can go to regular schools with small class size. He is now Prep in DML and he loves it there so much. The school is run by Catholic nuns and are very supportive of students with special needs. They accept anyone and don't discriminate. They offer Nursery, Kinder and Prep, students are 2 to 6 years old. You can call the directress, Sr. Nives Porlares at 7224979. Other schools in QC like The Nest and Child's Place also received good reviews.

OB Montessori

Anonymous's picture

hi..i plan to enroll my kids at ob montessori, both are pre-school ( 4yrs and 6yrs old) any feedbacks would definetly help my in my descision, plus does anyone here knows how much is enrollment there?

Please have your child

Anonymous's picture

Please have your child assessed at OB Montessori. They have high standards for their Prep level (known as Advanced CASA), kids are asked to spell blending words (among others)and if your child fail to answer the set of questions correctly he/she will be recommended to take the Kinder level again. This happened to my son and i am having second thoughts in enrolling there. 75k per year exclusive of books & uniform.

ob montessori

Anonymous's picture

yes, definitely have your child assessed first. my neighbor's 4 yr old son had his interview and according to the mom, his enrollment was put on hold because he still couldn't write and his speech was still limited. the mom was very transparent in the application form that her son was a late talker and has only been talking for less than a year. although he was able to answer the alphabet, number & shape questions, he was not able to answer all the verbal questions because his speech was still limited and that he couldn't write yet. so, he has to attend the trial classes for a week for them to assess him further. i was quite surprised when my neighbor told me about it because i thought schools' main goal is to develop and educate a child and help them become productive, but it seems that they will only accept children who are already developed.

i really need to know..

Update on Good Progressive School in Caloocan or Quezon City Are

Anonymous's picture

Hi,

Was looking for an alternative school for my kid near the Caloocan Grace Park area when I stumbled upon this thread. Read some of the post and it seems that "Early Achievers Learning Center" at Sgt Rivera, QC, is not so good an option anymore. Does anyone have a review of a school named Pace Academy also along Sgt Rivera?

Are there other schools in the Caloocan Grace Park area that anyone can recommend? Preferably w/ Chinese lessons and progressive style. If not Chinese at least Progressive style of teaching?

Thanks in Advance.

Bridge school sucks

Anonymous's picture

I seen Bridge School, the place sucks! Not so safe place for kids. You can see it yourself.

Bridge School

Anonymous's picture

I'm very sorry to hear about your impression of The Bridge School, because you are the only one who has said that. My son has been in Bridge for two years and the environment is very good. The atmosphere encourages learning in a different approach, where kids have so much fun and studying is not a chore. You can see it in every Bridge-bred child, each of them having a passion for learning, not seen in kids from other preschools. A 4 year old Bridge kid can easily outread a 5 or 6 year old from nearby schools.

It is in a safe and gated subdivision, with enough room on campus for the kids to roam freely and discover nature. Because as we all know, learning is not just done in the classrooms but more knowledge is gained by experiencing the outdoors.

I would suggest that you arrange for a tour of the school to see it for yourself. Too bad that the school year has ended and you wont see the kids in action. It's different when you see them in their daily school activities, seeing how much fun they're actually having while learning. But you'll see it in their school work posted around the classrooms. It speaks much of the stuff these kids have absorbed at such a young age. Imagine 4 year old kids writing notes and letters to express themselves.

As a parent, i am very much impressed with my son's achievement at his age, his eagerness to learn and his outlook towards school. These years are the formative years, and it's important for every child to have this attitude for learning. Safety is an issue, which is a main priority for the school, and i am very confident that whenever my son is in Bridge, he is in a safe place.

Anonymous's picture

Hi! My 8 year old is on his 3rd year at REACH next school year and my 6 year old will be moving there next school year, too. It's a progressive, totally non-traditional school that banks on individual education and the child's personal pace. They have great social activities to balance off the one-on-one curriculum. I like it because my boy catches up without peer pressure. He's self-motivated. But like I said, this is no way the same as the conventional school set-up. Some parents like it, some don't. Check it out. REACH gives trial classes.

Reach too!

Anonymous's picture

I was reading up on Reach as well...Already enrolled my daughter at Zobel for this year...but I like the philosophy that they put up in their website.I was reading some other blogs and they said the tuition was about P150,000. Can someone confirm this?

traditional vs. progressive schools

garlic's picture

Hi mommies I'm a newbie here and have been reading your posts for two days now.
I've been seriously thinking about transferring my two kids, aged 6 and 3 to a progressive school next schoolyear. They're both enrolled in a Chinese traditional school this year. (Btw, the school claimed to be part traditional part progressive when I asked them about their curriculum before, but it turns out, upon observation that they're not really progressive but traditional).

I live in Sta. Cruz and I'm having a hard time looking for a good progressive school near our place. Two of my friends are suggesting COLF or the Community of Learners Foundation in VAlencia Q.C. , Waldorf in Heroes Hill or OB Montessori.

Kindly help me by posting your insights on these three schools konti lang kasi ang narinig ko about them and if you have any idea regarding the tuition fees please please help me.

thanks and more power to moms exchange!

COLF

Anonymous's picture

We have heard good things about the quality of education at COLF. According to our sources, their kids are learning without the stress. Tuition fee is around 60K. Based on recommendations, we visited the school and noticed that the children are independent, speak good english, seem confident, etc. My children enjoyed the way the teachers conduct the lesson [the prospective new students are allowed to sit-in the class]. However, we're hoping that the school will consider the improvement and proper maintenance of the classrooms, canteen, restrooms and all the other facilites of the school.

hello! Just want to comment re Traditional vs Progressive. I think both approaches work for kids. But why don't we look for a school with integrated curriculum. There are schools which have both approaches. Kids need a progressive approach so they will enjoy school but Traditional approach is needed as well to prepare them for the "big" school. Thanks. Hope this may help...

Learning tree preschool

Anonymous's picture

Any mommies have feedback on the Learning Tree Preschool in Cubao, Quezon City?

The Learning Tree

fizzy1's picture

TLT is a wonderful preschool, using a progressive developmental approach. My son has had 3 wonder-filled happy years there. It is child-centered, the teachers are great and highly competent (many graduated from UP FLCD), the facilities are ok (lots of learning materials & space to move around), the curriculum responds to preschoolers' developmental needs (academic, emotional, social, physical, etc.), and learning is not limited to the classrooms. Go and visit the school and you will see active, confident, happy children: for them, school is fun, fun, fun!! Their graduates easily get into (even excel in) 'big' traditional schools, but for The Learning Tree, that is not what is important: it is nurturing your child's full potentials. And isnt that what we want at this crucial stage of our children's lives?

Re: The Learning Tree

Anonymous's picture

Thanks fizzy1. The TLT preschool in Cubao is far from our place, but we are strongly considering TLT Sikatuna for grade school.
